I like the distinction you make about heroism too. While making their labors to do so apparent, many have failed to state it so succinctly. :) There is a genuinely positive note in this story about Lt. Col. Vandeveld, in the fact that there are people like him still that are willing to make those sacrifices that you mentioned, in the name of an honor more real and meaningful than any that could be gained from a "position" nor from the approval of people who would have him be a dishonest man to join them. I say, If there is a heaven, there's no doubt that Vandeveld will be going there after this. Great post! I like the distinction you make about heroism too.
